DEPUTY STRATEGIC DIRECTOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES
Manchester is a thriving, modern metropolis renowned throughout the world for culture, leisure and sporting success, as well as its incredible diversity. A city brimming with confidence, we attract international interest and investment, and deliver ambitious programmes for our communities to ensure all our residents can share in our growth
We at Manchester City Council are determined to deliver growth that benefits everyone and tackle inequalities. We are focused on continuously improving our services to children and see the Deputy Director of children’s services as a key role in designing and delivering our response to the range of reforms recently announced by Government, directing and supporting service reform, supporting the strategic development of our partnerships and further developing professional practice of all our staff.
We are determined to continuously improve services to Manchester’s children and are looking for a suitably experienced strategic child centered, values-based leader who shares the same drive as members, children’s services leaders and young people to deliver high quality child centred services. The role oversees the whole range of social services and will require a strategic thinker focused on high quality social care practice and partnerships to make the difference to Manchester’s children, many of whom require that “extra mile”.
You would be joining a stable and high functioning children’s services senior management team and a Directorate that works with colleagues in Education in a truly integrated manner and a Council committed to children’s services best evidenced in our whole Council support to obtain UNICEF child friendly status.

TIMELINE
Closing date: 15th June
In person interviews: 1st July
Thank you for taking an interest in the role of Deputy Strategic Director of Children’s services in Manchester, a diverse city that has evolved so much in the recent past. We are a forward-looking city, and a city that embraces working with our partners to improve the lives of our residents. Many of these messages could also be used to describe our children’s services. In the past 10 years we have evolved considerably seeing our focus on continuous improvement move us from an inadequate performing local authority to a good local authority in the OFSED ratings , a forward looking authority which has designed and developed its own programme of service reform and develop a comprehensive practice framework and is currently engaged in obtaining UNICEF child friendly status and one that has a clear idea of what the Governments’ reforms can deliver for our children. Our approach to partnership working has ensured we have developed excellent working relationships with all our partners.
The city has its challenges many of which are deep rooted, with inequality and poverty at the core of the need for many requests for social care interventions, these issues are owned by our members, partners and residents and through Making Manchester Fairer and our Anti-poverty strategy where are actively attempting to address these systemic barriers. A deep understanding of these issues has shaped the services thinking over a number of years and is reflected in our commitment to early help, our approach to children’s social care and our current thinking on a more localised footprint to delivering children’s services whilst enhancing our knowledge of distinct communities and deepening our relationships with local partners .
The role is both demanding and challenging and is delivered within a framework of ambition, efficiency and continuous improvement. You will be supported by a stable, committed and highly motivated team both within and external to the Directorate including our partners in the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
